> ABOUT

Walk It Bike It to School Connecticut is a year-long promotional campaign for the federal Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program. The objective of the campaign is to promote a healthy lifestyle by motivating children to walk and bike to school, including those with disabilities.

Schools with grades K-8 around the state will be competing to walk the approximate distance of the perimeter of Connecticut (375 miles). The first classroom to walk the distance of the state will be recognized, and the classrooms that log the most miles by April 15, 2011, will be awarded prizes at an award ceremony at the State Capitol on May 19, 2011. Teachers will track their students’ progress online.

Students are encouraged to participate by logging the miles they earn biking or walking to school. Other means of earning miles are acceptable, including organized group and classroom activities.
